在100多本光学书中探索什么是光学

光是一种电磁波,因此遵循电磁理论。光的这种概念叫做电磁光学。虽然电磁波包含互相耦合的电场和磁场矢量波,但很多光学现象只需通过电场标量波描述,而这种近似处理就是标量波动光学,简称波动光学。光遇到尺寸远大于其波长的物体时,波动性质不易察觉,此时可使用遵循几何规则的射线描述光的传播。这种模型就是射线光学或几何光学,即波动光学在波长趋近于零时的极限形式。

在经典光学框架内,电磁光学提供最完备的解释,但某些具有量子本性的光学现象必须利用量子光学进行解释。电磁理论的量子版本叫做量子电动力学(QED)。对于光学现象,QED理论也叫做量子光学。
